Offices of Student Affairs, Athletics to Host Katie Koestner Presentation

September 12, 2017

The University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College Office of Student Affairs and Redstorm Athletics are honored to host renowned speaker Katie Koestner, a national expert on student safety and teen relationship culture, in the Berry Fine and Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Sunday, September 17. Through her work with Campus Outreach Services, Koestner is committed to promoting student safety and has become a leader in the movement to end sexual violence.

Koestner is the first date rape survivor to speak out publicly. Her story made national headlines in 1990 when the then 18 year-old college freshman’s case was dismissed by the court system. Through advocacy work and her personal testimony, Koestner has been influential to federal student safety legislation passed on Capitol Hill.

Because the risk of date rape is not exclusive to college campuses, Rio is inviting the public to attend the free event and learn more about ways to create awareness surrounding the issue, speak out and advocate for survivors. For more information on Koestner’s presentation, contact Dean of Students Dena Warren at 740-245-7396.
